Although it is John Michael McDonagh’s feature debut, The Guard is considered the biggest commercial success of independent Irish film so far. This dark crime comedy follows the life of small-town policeman Gerry Boyle. Eccentric Gerry has a confrontational personality, a penchant for prostitutes, and takes nothing seriously. When FBI agent Wendell Everett arrives in town, they have to join forces to fight an international drug-smuggling gang. The inventive soundtrack by the famous indie rock band Calexico imbues the film with a touch of Americana, turning the majestic landscape into an Irish version of Wild West. The overall effect of the film is imparted by cinematographer Larry Smith, also known for his work on Eyes Wide Shut and Only God Forgives.
