A glass of vodka with Andreas Dresen? Or would you prefer whisky?

Andreas Dresen is coming to Zagreb this autumn as one of Zagreb Film Festival jury members. We are very thrilled to be hosting one of the greatest German directors and take this opportunity to invite you to Goethe-Institute for a retrospective of his films.

Andreas Dresen is one of those filmmakers whose seemingly banal everyday stories create an image of socio-emotional situations, but always with an empathetic view on people, as in the films Summer in Berlin and Grill Point. In his film Denk ich an Deutschland… Herr Weichmann von der CDU he portrays MP Weichmann from market to market, and in Cloud 9 he ponders over love and sex in old age. The film Stopped on Track speaks about the last weeks in life of a cancer patient.

Recently, the Berlinale competition included his film As We Were Dreaming, a story about young people in Leipzig in the 1990s. Andreas Dresen also pursues stage directing in opera and theatrical productions and is actively involved in the functioning of the democratic system. His student film So schnell es geht nach Istanbul was already selected for Berlinale and won the Prix Europa, followed by many other awards at renowned festivals.

The retrospective of Andreas Dresen’s films begins on 16 November with Cloud 9, and all other films are scheduled each Wednesday at 6pm, at Goethe-Institute.

Cloud 9 / Wolke 9 , Germany, 2008, 98’, colour

Can the love affair between a 60-year-old seamstress and a 76-year-old man be presented with equal passion and emotional engagement as the love story of two attractive teenagers? Andreas Dresen has proven it can. Inge has been married for 30 years, she has a daughter and loves her husband. However, the sudden attraction towards a complete stranger will compel her to reconsider her role as a caring mother and devoted wife, while the passionate affair will pull her out of the rut and make her feel young, vivacious, and brimming with potential once again. But to what extent? The film won the Jury Coup de Coeur Award in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival.
