25 Years of the MEDIA Sub-programme: This Is How WE Do It!

The event taking place under the title This Is How WE Do It! connects the celebration of 25 years since the establishment of the MEDIA Sub-programme and Canada’s accession to Eurimages early in 2017. The focus will be on new MEDIA Sub-programme countries like Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Macedonia, Serbia, as well as low production capacity countries like Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Croatia, Malta and Slovenia. Also, ahead of Canada’s Eurimages membership, this is a unique opportunity to present the key Canadian national funds, such as Téléfilm Canada, Ontario Media Corporation Development and National Film Board.
The event, hosted by Martina Petrović, head of CED – MEDIA Office Croatia, will focus on issues like unique digital market, new European copyright legislation, Canada’s accession to Eurimages, challenges and good practice examples in the context of the MEDIA Sub-programme.

Dr. Doris Pack
German politician, President of EPP Women and former Member of the European Parliament 1989-2014. She served as a member of the Bundestag 1974–1983 and 1985–1989. She is a member of the conservative Christian Democratic Union, part of the European People’s Party. Pack was the chair of the EU Committee on Culture and Education (2009-2014). She is chair of the Franco-German Foundation for Cultural Cooperation, Secretary General of the French-German High Council of Culture, President of the European Children’s Book Fair, Vice-president European Movement Saar, President of the Adult Education association Saar, President Robert Schuman Institute-Budapest.
Hrvoje Hribar
Born in Zagreb, Croatia, Hrvoje Hribar graduated in film directing from ADU (Academy of Dramatic Arts) in Zagreb. He has worked as a first assistant director, screenwriter, radio playwright, cook and essayist. He produced and directed the comedy What is a Man without a Moustache?, the highest grossing film at Croatian box office in 2006, which was shown in more than 30 international film festivals. Prior to that, he also wrote, directed and produced two documentaries (The World is Great and Once there was a Man), as well as his first feature The Tranquilizer Gun. As a director and a scriptwriter, Hrvoje is also the author of Croatian Cathedrals (television film produced by HRT, Croatian public broadcaster) and the short film Between Zaghlul & Zaharias (produced by Tuna-film). In 2001, he directed the TV series New Age for Croatian Radiotelevision (HRT). He was awarded the Oktavijan (Best Croatian film of the year) several times (for the feature Tranquiliser Gun, the documentary Once there was the man and the short Between Z&Z).
Since November 2010, Hrvoje has been serving as a member of the Executive Committee of FERA. In September 2010 he was appointed Chief Executive of the Croatian Audiovisual Centre, the main audiovisual agency in Croatia.
Linda Beath
Niombo Lomba
Since 2015, Niombo Lomba is a Policy Officer at the European Commission, DG- Connect, Unit I.3 Audiovisual Industry and Media Programme, where she is a Seconded National Expert. Previously, she was Head of Staff of the State Counsellor for Civil Society and Civic Participation of the government of the State of Baden-Württemberg, followed by the Staff Unit Committee of the Regions, Civic Participation, and Trade Agreements in the Representation of Baden-Württemberg to the European Union. In the past she has dealt with cultural and media issues, e.g. as a member of the supervisory board of the Film- und Medienfestival gGmbH, which is running the Stuttgart Festival of Animated Film. She holds a Master of Arts degree in political science, communication science and psychology.
Electra Venaki
Holds an M.A (D.E.A) in Cinema, Audiovisual, Television and an B.A (Maitrise) in Cinema Studies from University Paris I Panthéon – Sorbonne. She is a former film editor and she taught for many years Editing and Sound Design in private and national film schools. She served as a chef of Audiovisual Production in Lambrakis Press Group (1999-2005) and her articles have been published in many collective books and renowned magazines. She is the founder of altcine, the web platform dedicated to Balkan Cinema.
Martina Petrović
Has major in International Relations and minor in Psychology. Martina has gained most of her working experience at the Ministry of Culture, Department for International Cultural Cooperation, being responsible for various cultural exchange programmes between Croatia and other countries; among many activities she was responsible for the organisation of Croatian film presentation during International Film Festivals in Berlin and Cannes. From 2008, she has been actively involved in establishing the Croatian Audiovisual Centre, where she has stayed, after being chosen by the European Commission on one hand and the Board of Committee of the Croatian AV Centre on the other hand, as the Head of MEDIA desk Croatia. Following immediate and successful results in terms of ensuring the financing by the MEDIA Programme, working thoroughly on the promotion of the Croatian film, resulted in receiving the first award “Albert Kapović” by the Croatian Producers Association, given at the opening of Zagreb Film Festival in 2010. As the Head of MEDIA desk Croatia (today’s – Creative Europe Desk – MEDIA Office) , she has been actively involved in organizing innovative and active presentations/workshops – important tools for education and networking – between Croatian but also European film professionals.
Soon-Mi Peten
Holds a Master’s Degree in European Law from the College of Europe. After graduating in Script Writing and Cinema Analysis at the University Libre, Brussels she carried out further research into cinema studies. Soon-Mi was an audiovisual consultant for five years before joining the MEDIA Programme in 2000 where she first specialised in Development support. She is currently Head of Promotion, Training and festivals within the European Commission’s Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency.
Ilir Butka
Film director and producer. He graduated the Albanian Academy of Arts in Tirana, Albania, has worked as film director and producer for many years and is actually the Chairman of The Albanian National Centre of Cinematography, the official institution of Albanian cinema. In addition he is the member of the European Film Academy, the founder and president of Albania Film Commission, and the founder of Tirana International Film Festival, the very first international film festival in Albania. Among his films he produced, it is important to single out the awarded ones such as Honeymoons, La Nave Dolce i Here Be Dragons.
Kamen Balkanski
Holds a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts. Form 1997-2002 he is the executive director of the Soros Centre for the Arts Foundation (being responsible for the financial and programme planning as well as for the cooperation with Bulgarian and international cultural organizations and NGOs). From 2002 – 2003, he is the associated lecturer at the National Art Academy in Sofia. The same year – 2002 – he becomes the administrative director of the MM television, and from 2004 – 2006, at the same television, he is the advisor to the CEO. From the year 2004 he is appointed to the position of the Head of MEDIA desk Bulgaria, and from 2015 as the acting director of the Bulgarian National Film Centre.
Boban Jevtić
Graduated in dramaturgy from the Faculty of Drama Arts in Belgrade. He worked as an organizer at the MOLDIST festival in Ukraine and at the 36th BITEF festival, as a copywriter in PUBLICIS, as editor in chief of “Yellow Cab“ magazine. He completed a course on Management in Culture organized by the French Ministry of Culture in 2002. He has worked on several theatre plays (“Hamlet“ at the National Theatre of Serbia, “In the Loneliness of the Cotton Fields” at Beton hala), he was the showrunner of several TV shows (Yellow Cab, 92 Stories About Belgrade, What We Eat) a made for TV film („Saјmište – A History of a Concentration Camp“), he wrote the screenplay for the TV series “Sixth Sense” and “Military Academy” and co-wrote the screenplays for the films Fourth Man and Military Academy 2. He was the selector for the BELEF theatre festival 2007. He is a regular theatre critic at the NIN weekly. He has received awards for theatre criticism at the 58th Sterijino pozorje, for his critical text “Empty Recitation”. He was the film editor of Dom Omladine in Belgrade from 2005 to 2015. He is the vice-president of the Screenwriters Association of Serbia.
Jean Pierre Borg
Executive officer at the Malta Film Commission. In the past four years he worked on various projects, including production tracking and more recently was the coordinator on an EU-funded training initiative intended to augment the skills of Malta’s film crews in both below and above the line positions. Jean Pierre was also project coordinator of the Maltese partner on EuroScreen, an Interreg project, dealing with Screen Tourism. Jean Pierre researched extensively about Malta’s cinematic past and was responsible for the foundation of Filmed in Malta, a Malta-based non-governmental organization dedicated to researching, documenting, and raising awareness about the long history of film-making on the island. Jean Pierre has co-edited: World Film Locations: Malta (eds. Charlie Cauchi & Jean Pierre Borg, Intellect, 2015) and authored a variety of articles on Malta, its locations and cinematic history in various local publications.
Sanja Ravlić
Began her career in 1987 as a Script Editor and Associate Producer at the Drama Department of Croatian Radiotelevision (HRT). Upon graduation from the British National Film and Television School (NFTS) she worked in the UK and Croatia, both as independent film producer and radio producer for the BBC World Service. In October 2007, she joined the core team of the newly founded Croatian Audiovisual Centre. From March 2010 till June 2012 she was Head of Development of the Croatian Audiovisual Centre and from January 2013 till January 2015 and again from July 2016 Head of Co-productions. She is also a member of the Croatian Audiovisual Centre’s Committee for the Encouragement of Investment in Production of Audiovisual works which manages Croatia’s audiovisual production cash rebate scheme, as well as the co-author of the Croatian National Strategic Programme for the Audiovisual Industry 2010 – 2014. Sanja has been Croatia’s national representative on the Board of Management of Eurimages from 2009 till June 2016. She is a member of the European Film Academy and a member of the Programme Advisory Council of the Croatian public broadcaster; Croatian Radiotelevision.
Isabel Castro Martinez
A trained lawyer and chartered accountant, Isabel Castro Martinez began her career as a teacher in the Ivory Coast. She joined the Council of Europe, firstly working in the Internal Control Department, then becoming Deputy Director of Internal Audit in 2001. In 2006, she joined Eurimages as Deputy Executive Director. In this role she is, in particular, responsible for the administrative and financial management of the Fund, as well as the distribution and exhibition support programmes. For the past three years, she has also been running the Eurimages “Gender Equality” study group. In this role she has overseen the implementation of a gender data collection system, has organised analyses and published studies by the Fund, as well as drafting the Eurimages gender equality strategy for the European film industry. Ms Castro is a bureau member of the European Women’s Audiovisual Network (EWA Network).
Jelena Popović
Producer at the NFB Animation Studio since January 2014, Jelena Popović forged her skills as production manager and associate producer on conventional, interactive and hybrid documentary and animation films. She also directed and co-wrote the documentary The Knights of Orlando (2007). In addition, she edited Patrick Doyon’s Oscar-nominated short Sunday and Claire Blanchet’s stereoscopic 3D short The End of Pinky, as well as three editions of films from the NFB’s acclaimed Hothouse program. She recently co-produced with Marcy Page Donald McWilliams’ Norman McLaren: Animated Musician, Theodore Ushev’s Blood Manifesto (Prix Créativité, Festival du nouveau cinema 2015), Sheldon Cohen’s My Heart Attack, (Best Animation, Ottawa international short film festival 2016) and Munro Ferguson’s Minotaur (VR and dome versions).
Lindsay Peters
Director of the Frontières International Co-Production Market, and the Industry Director for the Fantasia International Film Festival, the largest genre film festival in North America. She has over 10 years experience in festival management & film programming, with past positions at the Toronto International Film Festival, the Canadian Film Centre, Fashion in Film, and the Museum of the Moving Image. Lindsay has consulted for the Nordic Genre Boost, Shudder Labs, and Women in Film & Television. This year Frontières expanded its international profile by establishing a partnership with the Marché du Film, which will feature genre industry networking events in Cannes under the Frontières banner. The partnership between Frontières and the Marché du Film will also include new initiatives for the international genre film industry throughout Europe.
Ankica Jurić Tilić
Graduated in comparative literature from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Zagreb University. She is also a graduate of EAVE, member of ACE, Producers on Move and EFA. Her filmography includes more than 20 feature-length films, several TV series, and a number of shorts. Her films received more than hundred awards, most of them international; two of them were top cinema hits of the year at domestic market. Ankica ’s latest film titles are The Reaper by Zvonimir Juric (Toronto FF 2014), The High Sun by Dalibor Matanic (Cannes FF 2015 – Jury Prize winner; nomination LUX Prize, Croatian candidate for Academy Awards, 27 international and national awards) and Quit Staring at My Plate by Hana Jusic (Venice Days 2016).
Jovana Karaulić
Was a part of production teams of numerous feature and short films, including: The witch hunters director Rasko Miljkovic, Here and There director Darko Lungulov, The Dying Out director Milos Pusic and Serbian-Korean co-production of the movie Tenor. She is sensibilised for socially responsible subjects and is one of the founders and board member of the newspaper Lice Ulice a printed medium sold by vulnerable groups. She was the producer of the project “Film in Belgrade- location guide” for the Belgrade City Assembly. Jovana is third year of of scientific doctoral studies, University of Arts in Belgrade and laureate of the City of Belgrade Prize for the Opening Ceremony of the Universiade, as a producer in 2010 (NGIO Team).
Mirsad Purivatra
Director of Sarajevo Film Festival. In 1995, Mirsad Purivatra co-founded, together with Obala Art Centre, Sarajevo Film Festival now one of the most influential film festivals in Europe, and retains the post of festival director. In 2007, with Mirsad Purivatra’s initiative, the Festival further expanded to include an educational platform in form of the Sarajevo Talent Campus to those who will form the future of the region’s cinema. In 2003, Mirsad Purivatra initiated and developed the CineLink Co-Production Market as a part of the Sarajevo Film Festival, with a goal of aiding the development of regional cinematography, discovery of new talents, and the launching of new projects on the wider European market. Mirsad Purivatra is producer of the film Circus Columbia, directed by Danis Tanovic, co-producer of the film Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan and co-producer of the film Sieranevada directed by Cristi Puiu. He also teaches production at the Sarajevo Academy of Performing Arts.
Stavros Papageorgiou
In 1994 he founded Tetrakyts Films, which soon became one of the most active production companies in Cyprus in the audiovisual sector. Tetrakyts Films is the only local production company with a record of receiving financial support from the MEDIA development program of the European Union (for four film projects). The films we are interested in can largely be divided into films in the areas of ARTS & CULTURE and SOCIETY & POLITICS. The Arts and Culture area includes our recent documentary The Great Goddess of Cyprus and our new project in development: King Kinyras; The beloved high-priest of Goddess Aphrodite. The Society and Politics area includes our documentaries Murid completed in 2010, Missing Fetine which is currently in post production and our new project in development: The Position of European Women in STEM.
Boštjan Virc
Was born in Novo mesto, Slovenia (than Yugoslavia). He has a MA in media studies & communication and BA in economics. He works as a part of creative & business tandem with a director Žiga Virc. He entered film, video and TV production in 1992 establishing a family run company Studio Virc. He has worked for years in a field of commercial video & TV production, produced more than 700 corporate video film, TV ads and TV shows. Boštjan made his personal and professional breakthrough with a docu-fiction film Houston, We Have a Problem! by Žiga Virc. The film is a Slovenian major co-production with Croatia (Nukleus Film), Germany (Sutor Kolonko), Czech Republic (HBO Europe), Qatar while having on-board a complex portfolio of funders and broadcasters (MEDIA, Slovenian Film Centre, Croatian AV Centre, Viba Film Studios Slovenia, Eurimages, Doha Film Institute, RTV Slovenija, Westdeutscher Rundfunk, HBO Europe, DCM grant). The film is most seen Slovenian film in cinema in last two years while starting a successful festival career (Tribeca New York, Karlovy Vary, BFI London, Pula, Prizren with some more A festivals to follow in the following months).
