About the Festival

14th Zagreb Film Festival – 12-20 November 2016

HOT IN NOVEMBER #2

This year, for the second time around, Zagreb Film Festival takes place in November instead of October, more accurately from 12 to 20 November at the usual locations across Zagreb (Europa and Tuškanac cinemas, Museum of Contemporary Art etc.). This year the festival lasts nine days and two weekends (Saturday to Sunday), which entails more screenings, films and programmes.

FOLLOWING DEBUT FILMMAKERS FOR 14 YEARS

Zagreb Film Festival has from the very beginning been focusing on promotion and presentation of film debuts and emerging filmmakers. The main (competition) section has thus far seen former first-time directors, now celebrities like Steve McQueen, Cristi Puiu, Radu Jude, Xavier Dolan, Andrei Zviagintsev, Taika Waititi, Jeff Nichols etc., and the national Checkers competition gathers and presents new up-and-comers on the Croatian scene.

HANA JUŠIĆ – FROM CHECKERS TO MOSTRA AND BACK

One of the authors whose shorts screened several times in this section and the winner of Golden Pram in 2012 with her Terrarium is presenting this year her debut feature Quit Staring at My Plate in the main competition. Said film by Hana Jušić is arriving to ZFF with a FEDEORA Award for best European film, garnered at the recently held 73rd Venice Film Festival.

ZFF LOVES CO-PRODUCTIONS

Apart from Croatian filmmakers, whose developments have been systematically followed by ZFF, in recent years a special focus has been placed on Croatian co-productions with other European and world countries. Their participation in ZFF’s programmes will be specially highlighted at the 14th edition in a separate presentation ahead of the festival. For now let us just say that the competition includes a successful joint cinematic endeavour from Georgia, Russia, Spain and Croatia and the current Georgian Oscar candidate, House of Others, by the Georgian director Russudan Glurjidze.

ZFF’S NEW AWARD, GOLDEN BICYCLE

One great novelty of the 14th Zagreb Film Festival edition is a new award, the Golden Bicycle, for the best film in the official Together Again section – a line-up of new films by the authors whose previous titles screened at earlier editions of ZFF and who, in a way, grew together with the festival. This section also includes a successful Croatian co-production, the latest film by Cristi Puiu, one of the most prominent Romanian New Wave directors, the dead-pan comedy Sieranevada, which premiered at Cannes Film Festival.

POPULAR EXTRA PROGRAMMES

My First Film, selected by film critic Nenad Polimac, this year features debut films by the most significant Irish directors, The Great Five traditionally brings new titles from five largest European cinemas (United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy and Spain), and this year Bib for Kids by RBA and PLUS again present film pieces suitable for children and young audiences.

LAUGH YOUR HEART OUT AT 14TH ZFF

Apart from gaining insight into the most attractive and interesting short and feature narratives from all over the world, the 14th ZFF audience will have a good laugh with the Eastern European Comedies selection, including the finest envoys of the genre to the choice of film historian Daniel Rafaelić, as well as a line-up of mockumentaries in association with film critic Diana Nenadić.

THERE’S NO FILM WITHOUT INDUSTRY

The Industry section, dedicated to educational and practical content, is hosting a series of workshops, talks, panels and other events intended for film professionals, emerging filmmakers and all those with an interest in different aspects of film production. Industry also includes the 5th edition of My First Script workshop, for filmmakers preparing a screenplay for their first feature.
