King of the Belgians is a road movie and delightful satire about a clash of the worlds – Belgian monarch gets lost in the Balkans and, searching for his way home, ultimately finds himself. The lonely Belgian king Nicolas III travels to Istanbul in the company of British director Duncan who is making a documentary about him in order to revive the monarch’s dull image. While in Turkey, however, he gets the unsettling news that the region of Wallonia has declared independence from Belgium and the situation requires his immediate return. When a sudden solar storm causes a communications collapse and airspace shutdown, Nicolas refuses to wait it out so he and Duncan embark on an exciting odyssey across the Balkans.
