This year’s winner of the Un Certain Regard Prize is a biographical drama about the famous Finnish boxer, Olli Mäki. At the outset of his career, in 1962, Olli finds himself in the media spotlight as the first Finn to fight for the world championship title in featherweight boxing. Talented but modest, Olli feels uneasy as the national hero. To make matters more complicated, he has fallen madly in love. Despite the media frenzy, exhausting trainings, and a documentary crew following his every step, Olli doesn’t get carried away, keeping in mind what nobody wants to say out loud – that his chances of winning are slim to none. The Finnish entry for the Academy Awards is a caustic and witty critique of the manipulative media and spectacle-driven entertainment industry.
Born in Finland in 1979. He has worked as a film, theater, and opera director. His short films have won several awards at prestigious festivals such as Locarno and the Cinéfondation selection of the Cannes Film Festival. The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki is his first feature film.
